Whether it’s a missing tooth or discomfort with dentures – implants may be the answer. Dental implants replace missing teeth, and are often used instead of a bridge, or partial dentures. For denture wearers installing implants can provide a firm foundation for both upper and lower denture appliances. Implants are titanium fixtures (screws) that are secured to the jawbone. The jawbone heals to theses screws. The titanium implant is a hollow cylindrical screw that simply replaces the root portion of a natural tooth. Using sterile surgical techniques, the implant is positioned in the jawbone. The jawbones grows and fuses with the implant, once it is set after a three to four months period, a post is threaded into the screw and a replacement tooth affixed to the post. In the case of denture wearers, anywhere from two to four implants may be required to firmly affix the denture. Once the implants are in place, the denture is modified to fit over the titanium fixtures – offering immediate stabilization.
